At Saint-Gobain, we strive to build a more sustainable and inclusive world. Therefore, to establish our sustainability approach, we have set objectives to reach by 2030 in our key focus areas:

  1. Reducing CO2 emissions by 33% for scope 1 and scope 2, and 16% for scope 3 compared to 2017 levels

  2. Advancing a circular economy model by decreasing non-valorised production residue by 80%, increasing the avoidance of virgin raw materials by 30%, and using 100% recyclable packaging with at least 30% recycled or bio-sourced content

  3. Conducting life-cycle assessments for all our product ranges

  4. Decreasing industrial water withdrawal by 50% and eliminating water discharge in areas with a high risk of water scarcity

Our commitmets

Reducing CO2 emissions: our net-zero carbon target

We acknowledge the importance of reducing CO2 emissions in the fight against climate change. In 2019, we committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 by signing the UN Global Compact's "Business Ambition for 1.5°C" pledge. Our CO2 roadmap for 2030 includes a 33% reduction in scope 1 and 2 emissions and a 16% reduction in scope 3 emissions compared to 2017 levels. These targets have been validated by the Science-Based Targets initiative as being in alignment with our 2050 goal. To reach these targets, we will invest a targeted capital expenditure and R&D budget of around €100 million per year until 2030, implement internal carbon prices of €75/tonne of eq. CO₂ for investments and 150€/tonne for R&D projects to encourage the use of low-carbon technologies.

Our transition to circular economy

We are committed to transitioning to circular economy as a resilient growth model that can adapt to changes in available resources. Our strategy for developing a circular economy model includes the following focus areas:

  • Evolving our products and solutions to reduce the use of virgin raw materials and increase the integration of recycled or renewable materials, extending their lifespan, and facilitating their recycling or reuse

  • Developing new and sustainable manufacturing processes

  • Collaborating with stakeholders to create new business models and value chains

Product stewardship: increasing transparency

Saint-Gobain is the world's leading supplier of verified EPDs in the construction sector, with more than 1,800 verified EPDs published in over 35 countries. We believe that these assessments are essential for guiding innovation, providing key information to customers and responding to a growing market demand for greater transparency. We are dedicated to ensuring that by 2030, 100% of the Group’s revenue is generated from products that have undergone verified Life Cycle Analysis or Environmental Product Declarations, except for distribution activities.

Improving water management

We have implemented a water management policy to minimize the impact of our activities on water resources. Our long-term goal is to withdraw as little water as possible while working towards "zero discharge" of industrial water and avoiding any new impacts on other natural environments and stakeholders. To achieve this, we strive to:

  1. Minimize water withdrawals from natural sources and optimize processes for reduced consumption

  2. Reuse process water whenever possible

  3. Recycle water through appropriate treatments

  4. Avoid degrading water quality by reducing and controlling discharges to prevent accidental pollution

  5. Not compete with local communities for access to drinking water
